As spring came and temperatures warmed, the laboratory was still struggling to fill staff vacancies. Oppenheimer ingeniously suggested that the Met Lab pick up some of the more pressing work. In a phone call to Groves’s office, he said the work could be done in Chicago without having to move people to Los Alamos and find housing for them. Oppenheimer requested some thirty thousand man-hours of work, which he calculated would be the equivalent of sixty persons for perhaps three months. Additional army SEDs also arrived, and Colonel Tyler,* the new Los Alamos post commander, received permission from Groves to build two dormitories to house them. The population of the Hill continued to grow, and Groves was forced to authorize an expansion to the hospital as well. The long-sought machinists arrived but put further stress on the already desperate housing situation. Groves partially solved the problem by ejecting army nurses from their quarters and giving them to the machinists. When Parsons asked Groves for an additional thirty staff members, and then 160 more, the general once again called on Admiral Purnell for help. Groves remained unflappable, accepting the unanticipated as normal, except, perhaps, when he broke a tooth on a visit to Los Alamos in late April and was forced to call O’Leary to make a dentist appointment for him as soon as he returned home.
